Settlement applications
Indefinite leave to remain—also called settlement—allows an eligible person to live, work and study in the UK without a time limit. The qualifying route and requirements depend on the immigration permission held and the applicant’s history.
- Settlement after a qualifying family or work route
- Ten-year long residence applications
- Continuous-residence and absence calculations
- English-language and Life in the UK requirements
- Suitability and previous immigration issues
British citizenship
Naturalisation is not automatic after settlement. Eligibility commonly turns on residence, physical presence on the relevant date, absences, immigration status, language and Life in the UK requirements, future intentions and good character.
Different provisions apply to registration applications, including many applications involving children. Citizenship should be assessed under the correct legal basis rather than treated as a standard visa form.

Frequently asked questions
Is British citizenship automatic after ILR?
No. Naturalisation is a separate application with its own residence, status, good-character and other requirements.
Do I always need to hold ILR for 12 months first?
Many applicants do, but someone married to a British citizen does not normally need to wait 12 months after obtaining ILR or settled status. All other eligibility requirements still apply.
Can absences affect an application?
Yes. Settlement and citizenship routes have different residence and absence rules. Dates should be calculated carefully before applying.
Can a child apply for British citizenship?
A child may be entitled or eligible to register under various provisions depending on birth, parents’ status and later circumstances. Registration is not the same as adult naturalisation.
