The core requirements
- A confirmed offer of an eligible job
- An employer approved by the Home Office as a sponsor
- A valid Certificate of Sponsorship
- An eligible occupation code
- Salary meeting the applicable threshold and going rate
- The required knowledge of English or an exemption
- Maintenance funds or an applicable exception
- Any role-specific evidence such as a criminal-record or TB certificate
Salary and occupation code
For many applications, pay must meet both the applicable general threshold and the going rate for the occupation. Lower thresholds, different rules and transitional provisions can apply in particular circumstances.
A job title alone does not decide the occupation code. The actual duties, skill level, working hours and business context must be considered.
Certificates of Sponsorship
A Certificate of Sponsorship is an electronic record assigned by the employer. Defined certificates are generally used for Skilled Worker applicants applying from outside the UK; undefined certificates are generally used for in-country applications and other sponsored routes.
Information about the role, salary, dates and occupation code should be checked before assignment because inconsistencies can affect the worker and the sponsor.

Frequently asked questions
Does every job qualify for sponsorship?
No. The job must fall within an eligible occupation code and meet the applicable skill, salary and other route requirements.
Can I apply without a Certificate of Sponsorship?
No. A Skilled Worker applicant needs a valid Certificate of Sponsorship from an approved sponsor before submitting the application.
Can a Graduate visa holder switch in the UK?
Many eligible Graduate visa holders can switch from within the UK if the Skilled Worker requirements are met and a valid application is submitted in time.
Does the route lead to settlement?
It can lead to settlement after the relevant qualifying period if all requirements are met. Time on the Graduate route does not generally count toward the five-year Skilled Worker settlement period.
