More than an online form
UKVI considers whether the organisation is genuine and lawfully operating, whether key personnel are suitable, whether the proposed employment is genuine and whether the organisation can meet its sponsor duties.
- Employ a new worker who requires sponsorship
- Retain an employee whose current permission is ending
- Move an eligible Graduate visa employee to Skilled Worker
- Create a structured route for future sponsored recruitment
What UKVI will consider
- The organisation is genuine and operating lawfully in the UK
- It is honest, dependable and reliable
- Its key personnel are suitable
- Appropriate systems exist to carry out sponsor duties
- The proposed employment and business need are genuine
- The intended role meets the relevant route requirements
- Required supporting documents can be provided on time
A joined-up application strategy
When a business is applying to retain or recruit a specific person, the sponsor licence should not be prepared in isolation. The duties, occupation code, salary, working arrangements and business need should be considered from the start.
Obtaining a licence does not itself give the worker a visa. The business must usually assign a suitable Certificate of Sponsorship before the worker submits a separate immigration application.

Frequently asked questions
Can a small business obtain a sponsor licence?
Yes. There is no general minimum employee count simply to apply. The business must be genuine, lawfully operating and able to meet the relevant requirements and duties.
Can a newly established company apply?
Potentially. Its operations, available documents, recruitment need and ability to comply need careful assessment.
How long does an application take?
UKVI currently states that most sponsor licence applications are dealt with in less than eight weeks. A limited paid priority service may be available, and UKVI may carry out further checks or visit the business.
Who must pay the licence fee?
The organisation must pay the sponsor licence fee itself. Current Home Office guidance warns of revocation if the sponsored worker is asked to pay it or prohibited associated costs.
